How Long Does Shipping from China to USA Take?

Two numbers, always: the vessel or flight time, and the time until it is at your door. This page keeps them apart, lane by lane, and lists what makes each one longer than the schedule.

How long does shipping from China to USA take? There are always two answers

The first is transit: how long the vessel or aircraft is moving. The second is delivery: how long until the goods are physically in your building, duty paid and released. They differ by a week or more, and nearly every disagreement about a late shipment comes from one party quoting the first and the other expecting the second.

Every figure on this page is a planning range, not a commitment. If someone offers you a guaranteed delivery date on ocean freight without a premium and a written service commitment, the guarantee is not real.

Transit time: port-to-port and door-to-door are different numbers

Data last verified:

A forwarder quoting “12–22 days to the US” is describing the vessel, not your shipment. Your goods land inside that window only if pickup, export clearance, vessel discharge, US entry and final delivery all behave. Both columns below are planning ranges — the second column is the one your customer will ask about.

Air freight transit time from China to USA

Air transit is measured airport-to-airport and is far more stable than ocean transit, because aircraft schedules are less exposed to blank sailings and canal routings. Three to five days covers most major gateway pairs.

Where air loses its advantage is at the ends. Pickup, export declaration, entry filing and final delivery can easily add four or five days, which is why the door-to-door range is roughly double the flight time. The chargeable-weight mechanics and the gateway options are on the air freight page.

Inland and intermodal transit: the part nobody quotes

For any destination that is not a coastal city, there is a third leg. Two structures compete:

  • West Coast discharge + intermodal rail (IPI). Fast to Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City and Memphis, and usually cheaper than an all-water routing.
  • East Coast all-water then truck or rail. Slower to the port but closer to the dense Northeast and Southeast markets.

The rail ramp adds handling and free time. Detention and per-diem start against a clock you do not control, so book the outbound drayage before the container arrives rather than after.

Four things that reliably make transit longer than the schedule

  1. Blank sailings. Carriers cancel services to manage capacity. A cancelled sailing does not delay your container by a day, it moves it to the next vessel.
  2. Port congestion. Vessel waiting time at anchor is invisible in a port-to-port quote and shows up as a late delivery.
  3. CBP examinations. A document review is fast; a physical exam means the container moves, gets unpacked and is re-packed, all against the terminal's clock rather than yours.
  4. Filing errors. ISF must be transmitted 24 hours before loading at the foreign port, and a late or incorrect filing carries a USD 5,000 penalty per violation. See the ISF 10+2 guide.

Why the same lane re-prices within weeks

Capacity and blank sailings move the spot market faster than any duty change. These are the published numbers behind "rates are volatile" — each with its own publisher and date.

Planning backwards from a delivery date

If you have a hard date, work backwards and add contingency at each handoff:

  • Final delivery date minus 2 days for the inland leg and any appointment wait
  • Minus 3–5 days for clearance and release, more if an exam is possible
  • Minus the ocean or air leg, taken from the upper end of the range
  • Minus 3–5 days for origin pickup, consolidation and export declaration
  • Minus 3–7 days for production and booking lead time at your supplier

On that arithmetic, a West Coast door-to-door shipment needs roughly five to six weeks of runway from the day you place the order. Teams that plan on the lower end of the range are the teams that pay air freight in December.

Knowing what a delay costs you matters too — model the alternative in the landed cost calculator before deciding to expedite.

Shipping time from China to USA: common questions

How long does shipping from China to the USA take?
By sea, roughly 12–22 days port-to-port to the US West Coast and 32–45 days to the US East Coast; door-to-door, add about 6–8 days. By air, 3–5 days airport-to-airport and 5–10 days door-to-door. Those are planning ranges for standard cargo in normal conditions.
Why do I get a different transit time from every forwarder?
Because they are answering different questions. One is quoting the vessel schedule, another is quoting a door-to-door average, and a third is quoting a range with a service guarantee they cannot actually make. Ask which port pair, which caliber and which date the number is based on — a defensible answer is a range with its assumptions, not a single figure.
What is the fastest realistic option from China to the US?
Air freight into a West Coast or inland gateway, cleared pre-arrival, with a truck booked in advance. Five to seven days door-to-door is achievable. Anything faster is express courier on a small shipment, and the cost per kilogram rises sharply.
What causes the biggest delays?
In rough order: blank sailings that remove a week from the schedule; terminal congestion at the discharge port; a CBP examination, which can hold a container for days; and documentation errors, of which a late or incorrect ISF filing is the most expensive at USD 5,000 per violation.
Does the incoterm change the transit time?
It changes what you are measuring. Under FOB your clock starts when the goods are loaded; under DDP it ends when they are delivered. The physical movement is the same, but the number a seller quotes under DDP will be longer because it includes both ends.
